12. PROVIDING ASSISTANCE FOR DINING/FEEDING

  • It is important to prevent the spread of any infections, including COVID-19, that this protocol be followed during meals, snacks and when assisting students in eating.
  • Preparation prior to meals, snacks:
  • Tables/desks and chairs to be disinfected prior to the start of meals
  • Disposable plates and silverware are to be used whenever possible unless Nursing, OT or Speech Therapists determine otherwise.
  • Specialized utensils, plates, and other meal equipment are to be washed in the dishwasher by staff only, and washed on the sanitize mode daily
  • 1 staff member will be assigned from each room to set up all of the Students’ meals in a designated prep area.
  • Meals coming from Emily’s should be handled first, one pair of gloves can be worn when preparing.
  • Gloves should be then be changed and hands should be
  • washed/sanitized before handling students’ personal meals. Gloves should be changed and your hands should be washed/sanitized in- between preparing each individual meal.  Masks are to be worn at all times during food preparation.
  • 1 staff member will be designated to pass out each meal wearing mask, gown, and gloves.
  • During Meal/Snack Times for students who need supervision and/or verbal prompts or reminders:
    • o Students should eat in their classrooms or other designated space and be seated with adequate distancing between seats and facing the same direction when eating. (The (6) feet apart social distancing requirement must be strictly adhered to while students, staff, anyone is eating).
    • o Students should be reminded to not talk while chewing and cover their mouths as needed
    • o Students who are prone to coughing when eating should be appropriately distanced from others  greater than (6) feet.
  • During Meal/Snack Times for students who need direct hands-on assistance such as, physical guidance, hand over hand, totally fed by others:
    • o Staff who are assisting should wear these PPE items:
      • Gloves
      • Mask (Surgical or KN-95, not just a cloth mask or face covering)
      • Face shield and or goggles
      • Gowns
    • o All of these items should be changed before helping another student. For example:
      • Remove all PPE items
      • Dispose of all PPE items
      • Wash hands
      • Put on all PPE items (as above) if you are helping with the next student to eat.
      • Wash hands
    • o 1:1 Assistance must be provided at all times during meals.
    • o All disposable dishes and silverware will be discarded immediately after the meal is finished
    • o Tables and chairs to be sanitized after meals
    • o Wash hands.
  • During Meal/Snack Times for students who are tube-fed:
    • o PPE to be worn: mask, gown, gloves and consider face shield in some cases
    • o Nursing to sanitize work area before starting Tube feeding procedure
    • o Nursing to follow Tube feeding protocol (see Tube feeding protocol)  Students should be at least 6’ apart from one another.
    • o Nursing to sanitize work area after Tube feed is complete
